Those Weird Unschoolers

Have you ever told someone you homeschool and they look at you as if you're a bit strange? What if you say you unschool? Do they think you're rather weird?

I really see no reason for that reaction. My family is perfectly normal. See for yourself:

Just a perfectly normal unschooling family.

Oops! Have I broken the rules? What did I tell Callum in my post Life is a Blog Post?

6.       Never post embarrassing photos of anyone.

Before I hit 'publish', I'd better go and show this post to everyone...

...It's OK. No one minds. In fact everyone is very happy to be in my blog post. Look... can't you see their happy smiles?

B

A very happy normal unschooling family!

If you'd like to make your family into aliens or monsters or elves or... just give them enormous grins, visit the photo editing website KIZOA. It's free!

What's that you say? You think my photo is an improvement?

A big thank you to Andy, Duncan, Callum, Imogen, Charlotte, Sophie and Gemma-Rose. You certainly know how to laugh at yourselves!

  1. I nearly fell off my chair ... especially at the first photo!

You and your family have a great sense of humour.

    God bless.

    1. Victor,

I hope you didn't get too much of a shock. I hope it was laughter that made you fall off your chair and not horror. That first photo? A great improvement. I might even use it as my profile shot.

I hope we made you smile.

      God bless.

    2. My photos look just like the ones above without the benefit of the KIZOA program.

Years ago I sent my photo to a "Lonely Hearts" dating agency and they returned it saying: "We're not that desperate!"

      God bless.

    3. Victor,

Now I realise why you use your book cover as your profile picture. And I thought you were just shy...

  2. A few years ago I wrote a post entitled Homeschoolers are so weird. Over the years, that post has consistently gotten more hits than any other! My kids think the old stereotype is funny. My daughter wants me to get a bumper sticker for our car that says "Weird, unsocialized homeschoolers on board". I think, though, this post will do more for the image of homeschoolers as a "little different" than anything else!!!! :) Thanks for the laugh, and, yes, the initial shock too.

    1. Kari,

This post was such good fun to make. Yes, it will contribute to the image that homeschoolers are different but that's OK. We like being a bit weird. Sounds like your daughter has a great sense of humour too!

I can't wait to read your own weird post. It is so interesting seeing which are the most popular posts. A crazy title certainly helps to gain attention.

I am glad you laughed. We laughed so much we had tears running down our faces. That image of Victor falling off his chair set us all off!

    1. Vicky,

The real me? Perhaps I've been hiding the real me all these years. I am seriously considering using this photo for my profile now that my real ones make me look so old. Weird or old? What do you reckon is the worse?

The kids will think it's funny we scared their auntie!

  5. Ohhh... those first photos are creepy! Those eyes make your photos look so sort of out of this world alien-type! Looks like you all had a lot of fun playing around with Kizoa. I may head on over there myself to play around too!

    1. Noreen,

I chose the 'alien' option to make our silly faces. Yes, those big eyes are very creepy! There are some great free online photo-editing websites. If you head over to Kizoa, have fun! I bet your son would love to have a go too.

    1. Hi Amy!

I write so many serious stories that sometimes it's good to have a change and be silly and laugh. Thank you for laughing with me (or perhaps at me!)

  7. Shocking! Un Schooling Home Schoolers! My daughter walked by as I was scrolling down and said, "WHAT IS THAT?!? Their eyes are too big. What is this?" She is nine. I had to explain that there are programs available to alter how the person looks... she said, "OH, like PhotoBooth." Yes, like that!! She let me know that she didn't like it anyway and liked the ones where you all just have great big grins. Funny.. you should see the things she comes up with of herself on PhotoBooth!! Anyway, having fun is so ... FUN!! (illustrative, I know.)

  8. Elm,

Your daughter is quite right. The photos look awful. I'm so glad we don't really look like that. But it is fun to play around. I haven't seen PhotoBooth. I shall investigate! Thank you for stopping by.

    God bless.

    1. Mary,

You have discovered my embarrassing photos! I still grin every time I see them. Actually, I was thinking of putting these photos in my side-bar as our profile pictures. But maybe that would put potential readers off. They might decide we are all just too weird and not want to hang around my blog, even for a moment!
